Dusit D2 Chiang Mai

It has been quite a while since I had any good content to update the blog with, but now we are finally out and about again.

We are expecting child no. 2 and we wanted to take a trip with H before the next one comes, so we decided on a trip to Thailand.

I managed to find two tickets with Eurobonus with the direct flight with Thai airways in business class for H and J, so there we saved a lot of money. We wanted H to have his own seat for such a long flight. The flight was almost 11,5 hours, so it was nice for him to be able to sleep.

Our first night we spent in Bangkok and the following day we took a flight with Thai Smile (Thai airways cheaper alternative). The flight was approx 1 hour, so quite fast.
We had decided to stay at Dusit D2 Chiang Mai since we in Bangkok used to star at Dusit Thani. Keep in mind that their D2 is a simpler branch from them. My father had stayed here before and liked the location.
Once arrive at the hotel the rooms were upgraded to their Studio Suite which was a nice surprise.

The location was good. Close to a night market were one could get really good street food at very low prices. There was also a Starbucks and Mc Donalds close by. However, the area during daytime was pretty dead. I don’t know if this is a result of COVID, or if it is like this all the time.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. The rooms has everything one could want. The hotel was for the most part very good. I would say that the pool area was a disappointment as the pictures online did not at all show reality. The pool area was very run down and there was no service around the pool. We had chosen the hotel to be able to take a swim with H, but the pool was not child-friendly at all.

The breakfast was good, buffet style, with egg station. The only thing missing was bacon (yes everyone who knows me knows I need my morning bacon) and it was not until the last morning I found out that you could have requested bacon at the egg station. Otherwise they had everything one could want on a breakfast buffet. It was good, not outstanding or memorable, but solid. The breakfast area was nice and modern.

Our rooms came with executive lounge access, however they did not have a separate lounge for this, but was located in the main bar in the hotel lobby. I did not mind that at all, since it was a nice area and for the first 3 evenings the service was great. Usually there is a small buffet with snacks and such in a executive lounge, here they served you by the table. I do understand that this is due to COVID-situation and the first evenings the guy behind the bar did a great job refilling our snacks whenever needed. The last evening we only received one serving. the food was OK, not great, but that is more a matter of taste than service. I would definitely say that it is worth to add the extra money for executive lounge.

Review Summary:

  • Rooms: 4/5

    • We stayed in a Studio suite, which was very nice and spacious. You could tell from the carpet on the floor that the hotel is not newly renovated, but it did not in any way feel dirty.

  • Service: 4/5

    • The service was good, nothing outstanding. The staff was nice and helpful and the service is what one expects in Thailand. The staff the last day seemed a little confused as it took way too long time to get food and drinks with such few guests.

  • Bed: 3/5

    • The bed was quite hard, pillows were good.

  • Amenities: 3/5

    • Pool area needs a serious renovation to match online pictures. Did not visit the SPA. Executive lounge was part of lobby bar, which was OK.

  • Price: $$

    • We stayed 4 nights in rainy season (September) which cost 4123 SEK (386€ / 388$). We booked Club Delux King room with Club lounge access, but received a complimentary upgrade to Studio Suite.
